Theatre

As with the visual arts, our goal in the theatre department is to enhance students' appreciation of theatre as a literary and performing art, whether they are active participants on or off stage or simply members of an audience.

Academic courses cover all aspects of drama, including acting, play production (ranging from set design and lighting to makeup), directing, the history of theatre, public speaking, playwriting and storytelling. Involvement in dramatic productions produced by the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association (HDA) is open to all students and is a popular extracurricular activity.

Students from theatre courses present a number of studio workshop plays each year, and, under the auspices of HDA, stage two major plays, a musical, and a musical theatre revue.

Hotchkiss Theatre

The major theatre facility is the Walker Auditorium. This 660-seat proscenium theatre boasts modern lighting and sound systems as well as comfortable dressing rooms and a green room. A black box theatre adds significantly to the flexibility of rehearsal and performance space.

Theatre courses fulfill the arts requirement.
