Study-Abroad Opportunities

Hotchkiss provides many options for educational experiences in international settings.

  • The English Speaking Union

Hotchkiss receives a student from an ESU school each year, and our students also have the opportunity to spend a year at an English boarding school between graduation and college. Students apply in the fall of their senior year and must defer college acceptance in order to attend.

  • Hotchkiss Summer Arts in Italy

As part of the Amalfi Coast Music Festival, the Hotchkiss Summer Arts Program offers options in both music and the visual arts in an intensive study format. Daily classes are interspersed with excursions to the most significant points of interest in the area: museums, architectural ruins, temples, and palaces at the world-famous sites of Pompeii, Naples, Capri, Ravello, and more.

  • Round Square

    www.roundsquare.org
Round Square is an association of 60 schools around the world that support each other, both individually and collectively, to promote the principles of internationalism, democracy, environmental awareness, adventure, leadership, and service.

Faculty and student representatives participate in an annual conference to share lessons learned and methods used, and to develop joint projects and future plans. Hotchkiss has sent delegations to international conferences in Salem, Germany; Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa; Deerfield, Massachusetts; Melbourne, Australia; Gordonstoun, Scotland; and Indore, India.

During the school year, Hotchkiss welcomes students and teachers from Round Square member schools on short-term exchanges. Hotchkiss students also have the option of participating in term, summer, or gap-year exchanges at consortium schools across the globe. Round Square schools also run International Service Projects over breaks. Hotchkiss students and faculty have participated in projects in Honduras, Guatemala, South Africa, and Tanzania.

  • School Year Abroad (SYA)

Our membership in the School Year Abroad program allows qualified students to increase their knowledge of another language and culture through total immersion in the life of France, Italy, Spain, or the People’s Republic of China.

Participants live with families, attend SYA’s unique schools, and pursue a course of study (both in English and in French; Latin, Greek and Italian; Spanish; or Mandarin Chinese) under the supervision of teachers from the sponsoring schools. SYA provides full academic credit, college testing and guidance, permitting students to graduate from Hotchkiss with their own class while continuing their preparation for selective colleges and universities.

Students apply in their lower-mid or upper-mid year to attend SYA as an upper mid or senior. Postgraduate years in China and Italy are available as well.
